Valve timing and camshaft control
Cam timing is influenced by mechanical chain condition, tensioners, camshaft adjusters, oil supply and electrical controls. A correlation fault may arise from a sensor or control fault as well as incorrect mechanical timing.
How a technician distinguishes possible causes
Record fault codes and freeze-frame data, compare specified and actual cam positions at idle and varying engine speeds, inspect oil condition and evaluate adjuster control. Verify mechanical timing with engine-specific procedures when data supports it.
Repair and post-repair verification
Repair the verified cause, then confirm timing correlation and normal cold-start and warm-running behavior.
A rough idle or camshaft-related code may result from ignition, fuel, oil control or mechanical timing issues.
