Intermediate-shaft bearing applicability
The IMS bearing topic is primarily relevant to certain water-cooled flat-six engine families and production periods. Later direct-injection engines and other Porsche powertrains have different architectures. A noise or oil leak is not proof of IMS failure.
How a technician distinguishes possible causes
Identify the exact engine and production date; review service history and oil-filter debris. Determine which IMS design is fitted before discussing preventive work. Other sources of noise and leaks must be excluded.
Repair and post-repair verification
Only recommend bearing-related work when technically applicable, and explain that procedures and access differ by transmission and engine design.
Certain naturally aspirated M96/M97 engines have intermediate-shaft bearing designs that deserve model-year and engine-specific evaluation. The term “IMS problem” should not be applied to every 911.
