4MATIC and driveline isolation
Driveline vibration or binding can originate in tires, wheel bearings, axle joints, prop shafts, differentials or transfer-case components. Confirm tire sizes and rolling circumference, then distinguish steering-angle-related binding from speed-related vibration and load-dependent noise. Inspect mounts and joints, review relevant chassis fault data, and avoid assuming a transfer case is defective based on a shudder alone.
Repair decisions and verification
Road-test after repair at the same speed, steering angle and load that reproduced the original symptom.
A humming, clicking or shudder under acceleration may be caused by tires, bearings, driveshafts, differentials or transfer-case operation.
How the problem should be evaluated
Road-test to reproduce the condition, check tire sizes and wear, inspect shafts and joints and evaluate fluid leaks and fault records.
Why the model and engine matter: Early ML systems differ substantially from later W166 vehicles.
