Timing and camshaft diagnosis
The crankshaft and camshafts must remain synchronized for proper valve timing. Correlation faults may involve a stretched chain, tensioner, guide, cam adjuster, oil supply or sensor circuit. Record the exact fault, freeze-frame data and start-up noise, then compare actual and specified cam positions with engine speed and temperature. Inspect oil level and condition and evaluate solenoid operation before recommending major timing work. Mechanical timing verification requires the correct engine-specific procedure; a correlation code alone does not prove chain stretch.
Repair decisions and verification
After repair, confirm mechanical timing, clear faults, perform any prescribed adaptations and verify cold-start and warm-running operation.
Vehicle context: C 250, 2013. Chassis: C-Class W204 Sedan. The same warning may require a different diagnostic path on another engine or year.
Symptoms and customer complaints
Cam-phaser rattle, slow/hard start, intermittent lack of power and P0340; P0340 and slow start returned after timing-system and sensor replacement.
Brief startup rattle, intermittent startup misfire/poor running, P0340 and P0016 after prior battery and cam-sensor replacement.
MIL and timing-chain-area engine rattle with P0016 and P0340-62.
MIL with P1600.
Recorded trouble codes: P0340, P0016, P0340-62, P1600. A stored code points to a monitored condition, not automatically to a failed component.
Diagnostic approach
The researched cases used checks including Verify engine noise source; Inspect timing-chain tensioner; Verify after replacement; Inspect timing system. A technician must interpret the results in the context of the actual vehicle.
The recorded case findings included Rattle from timing-chain area; oil clean and full; Tensioner worn; Rattle gone; codes do not reset; Timing chain loose. These findings are examples, not assumptions to apply to every Mercedes-Benz.
Documented causes in the source cases included Worn timing-chain tensioner; Loose timing chain. Similar symptoms can result from other faults, so testing is needed before repair.
Reported successful case repairs included Replace timing-chain tensioner; Replace timing chain and tensioners. These are external research outcomes, not work claimed by our shop.
