Cooling-system failure isolation

Pressure loss, poor coolant circulation, thermostat problems, fan faults and heat-exchanger leakage can produce similar symptoms. Inspect for external leaks on a cold engine, pressure-test as specified, review coolant temperature sensor plausibility and verify pump and fan operation. Turbocharged and hybrid vehicles may have additional cooling circuits; identify the affected circuit before testing. Do not drive an overheating engine to reproduce the fault.

Repair decisions and verification

Bleed the correct cooling circuits, confirm thermostat behavior and stable temperature under controlled operating conditions.

Coolant odor, repeated top-ups and overheating can arise from different fittings and components depending on the installed engine.

How the problem should be evaluated

Identify the engine code, pressure-test the appropriate circuit and inspect pumps, thermostats, hoses and heat exchangers.

Why the model and engine matter: A diesel, V6 gasoline and V8 gasoline GLS require different procedures.
